Some thing never get old

This little Perl script I wrote 2 1/2 years ago to recover images from digital camera media is one of them.

It’s weird the way sometimes you spend months working on projects you never look at again, and then other times you write 25 lines of what you think is a one-off, and end up using it almost every day.

Listening to Magna Carta this foggy morning in honor of C.K. and Kris, who are supposed to be taking off for LA in about half an hour. Tara and I spent last night with them and Kris’s ever-gracious family for a farewell feast at Greorge Martin’s Firegrill in Rockville Centre. Great food, although I don’t think anyone was really paying attention.

I’m just selfish enough to find events like this difficult to “celebrate.” I’m thrilled for C.K., of course. He deserves this break. Mahalo is one of the few truly exciting Web 2.0 (oh, how I hate that phrase) applications, and really the only interesting thing to happen in the search industry since, well, Yahoo!, I guess. The crawler + ranked alrorithm paradigm is basically as old as World Wide Web. Older, really: I think Veronica and Archie predate the HTTP. They certainly predate its widespread adoption.

His gain, though, is our loss here in New York. It’s always trite to say that “_______ just won’t be the same without you,” but in this case, it’s true. C.K.’s warmth and friendship have been one of the touchstones of my New York experience, and it’s more than the overcast sky making this morning seem a little dreary.

Update?

August 24, 2007

Wow. I hadn’t realized how long it had been since I blogged here. Or anywhere else, for that matter. Summer is always such a crazy time, and this year doubly so with the move. Hopefully, though, things are settling down and I’ll get back into a normal rhythm of posting for both fun and profit. It seems to go along with a regular study patterns, more or less.
