Post-comps life

April 17, 2007

Planing my post-comps to-do list. Because one way or another, this is all over two weeks from tomorrow. Finally.

Packing for the move, of course, is a given.

After, or in between, that:

  • 20 posts/mo. a DLSQ
  • Refinish the “dining” table
  • Experiment with agar-agar and fruit and vegetable “caviar”
  • Start going to the gym regularly again
  • Plan a trip to MI
  • Learn to make jams and preserves
  • Learn to fillet a fish effectively
  • Re-learn my knife skills
  • Experiment with vinegar making

Flickr really needs to have an option to adjust the layout for individual posts at press time, but that’s neither here nor there. The real point of this post is this:

I have a problem. I picked up a five-pound crate of clementines to make the celementine cake. T and I have both been yeoman’s work on the remaining four pounds, but I don’t think we’re going to get through them all before they mold.

Today, though, inspiration hit in the form of this reject from from my ICE portfolio. I’m going to poach some of them.

Clementine Cake

Apologies for the pic, all I had was the cell.

Made Nigella Lawson’s Clementine Cake today, after cooking the clementines last night. I don’t know what I was expecting, but the cake certainly exceeded it. With no flour I was expecting something custardy, but chopping the almonds fine enough yields a texture…like some lemon poppy seed bundts: somewhere halfway between a custard and a cake.

Very tasty, especially for late winter. The almonds and eggs make it substantial and warming, but the citrus brings more than a hint of Summer.

Currently planning some variations.
